idiBuddy helps students develop listening comprehension through short, structured conversations with students who speak the language they are learning.
Students are not expected to speak fluently in their target language right away. Instead, each student speaks in their native language and listens to the language they are learning — a low-pressure exchange where every student can take part meaningfully from the beginning.
What is cross-talk?
Cross-talk is a language-exchange method in which two people speak different languages during the same conversation.
- A French-speaking student speaks French.
- An English-speaking student speaks English.
- Each student listens to the language they are learning.
- Both students respond in the language they can express themselves in most naturally.
Students use context, facial expressions, hand gestures, pictures, repetition, examples, and clarification to understand meaning. They are not expected to translate every sentence or understand every word. The goal is to follow the main ideas and stay engaged.
The Monthly Idi
idiBuddy is built around one standardized monthly conversation topic, called an Idi, for each proficiency level. Students at different levels discuss the same broad topic through prompts that suit their level.
Example monthly topic: Going Out
Beginner
Talk about three places you like to visit with friends or family. Talk about what foods you like to eat when you go out.
Intermediate
Describe three types of weekend activities for summer and winter. Compare and contrast the differences between summer and winter activities. Explain which ones you prefer and why.
Upper Intermediate
Describe a memorable experience you had while going out with friends. Explain what made the experience meaningful.
Advanced
Describe how you usually plan an outing with friends. Explain where you go, what you do, and how you decide.
Every student discusses the same broad theme, but the language demands are appropriate for their proficiency level.

How the experience works
- 1
A teacher creates and manages a class
The teacher sets up the class, enters basic information including native language, target language, and proficiency level and age range.

The teacher connects with appropriate partner classes
Teachers review relevant information about potential partner classes — such as proficiency level, age range, goals, and behavior — and stay in control of which connections are approved.

Students are paired with buddies
Teachers manage student pairings. Students do not independently search for, or contact, strangers.

Students receive the Monthly Idi
Students review the official monthly topic and preparation materials for their proficiency level.

Students prepare for the conversation
Students may review vocabulary, organize a few ideas, practice clarification strategies, and choose images or objects that helps them communicate. Memorizing a script is not expected.

Students join a short conversation
Each student speaks in their native language and listens to their buddy speak in theirs. Conversations are generally designed to last approximately five to ten minutes.

Teachers supervise participation
Teachers retain oversight of the educational experience according to their school's procedures.

Students reflect and continue
Students may reflect on what they understood, what helped them understand, and what they would like to improve during the next exchange. A new Idi begins the cycle again the following month.
