Plain-language summary for families, teachers, and schools. Last updated August 2026.
Who we are
idibuddy is a supervised, structured language-exchange platform for schools. It pairs classrooms so students can practice listening and speaking with a buddy who speaks the language they are learning. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and who can see it.
What data we collect
For teachers: your name, school email, school, and the classes you create. For students: first name, last initial, school email, and the class you belong to. All student data is entered by the classroom teacher when setting up the class roster.
When a call takes place, Idibuddy records the video and audio of the session so both teachers can review and grade it. The recording includes the date, duration, and the two students who participated.
Teachers may also enter grades and notes about a student's comprehension and participation. Students may also submit a moderation report about their buddy.
How we use your data
To set up and maintain buddy pairings between partner classes, to assign the Monthly Idi conversation prompts, and to let teachers grade and oversee their students.
Recordings are used so the teachers of both classes can review what happened, give feedback, and keep students safe. They are never used to train any AI models or sold to anyone.
Who can see what
Each teacher can see their own classes, rosters, grades, and recordings. When two classes are paired, the teachers of both classes can see the shared recordings and pairing details.
Administrators can see an overview of teachers, classes, and reports to keep the platform running.
Students never see each other's personal contact information. A student only sees their buddy's first name, last initial, and school.
Recordings and retention
Call recordings are stored securely and can be reviewed by the teachers of both classes. Teachers may archive recordings after 90 days, and recordings are permanently deleted when the class is finished, or when they are no longer needed for oversight.
If a parent or guardian asks idibuddy for any recordings to be deleted, idibuddy can remove them from the database at any time.
Keeping students safe
idibuddy is a supervised classroom tool. Students cannot message each other outside of assigned sessions, and every call can be recorded and reviewed by teachers.
If a student is ever uncomfortable, they can report their buddy from the Settings page. The report goes straight to the platform administrators, who can act on it.
